Bertone Revives RUNABOUT in Limited Series
On October 29th, 1969, Bertone surprised the automotive world with the unveiling of
the Autobianchi A112 Concept (Bertone Runabout) at the Turin International Motor
Show.
Now, more than 50 years later, Bertone reintroduces the first iconic model in its
Bertone CLASSIC range with a series of digital previews of the new Bertone RUNABOUT – a tribute to its design legacy, re-imagined with a performance-oriented package for the
modern era.
From 55 to 500 hp
The 1969 Bertone Runabout, also known as the Autobianchi A112 Concept, was based
around the in-development Autobianchi A112’s mechanicals — a shorter FIAT 128
platform — but with a larger, 55 hp 1.1-liter rear-mounted engine.
Although it never made it to production, it is credited as the main inspiration for the
later FIAT X1/9 (also designed and built by Bertone) and as the origin of several design
cues used in the Lancia Stratos.
The new Bertone RUNABOUT will be equipped with a V6 engine providing 500 hp.
Although the new Runabout will be significantly more powerful than the car it draws
inspiration from, it will preserve the character of a nimble, light-footed driving machine.
Designed for two passengers seated almost shoulder to shoulder in an exclusive cabin,
this model offers side-door access – a feature absent in the 1969 original.
Limited series and the launch of the Bertone CLASSIC Line
In keeping with Bertone’s tradition of exclusivity, the new Bertone RUNABOUT will be
produced in a limited series, showcasing its meticulous craftsmanship. This release also
marks the debut of the Bertone CLASSIC Line, a series dedicated to honoring the brand’s
most iconic automotive masterpieces.
There will be a unique opportunity to choose between two configurations: a barchetta
version, which offers a roofless, open-air driving experience, and a targa variant,
featuring a removable roof section. Both configurations embrace the spirit of freedom
and driving pleasure, continuing the legacy of the original Runabout.
According to Andrea Mocellin, Design Lead, “The new Bertone RUNABOUT is not just a
design object but a celebration of Italy’s tradition of spectacular sports cars – crafted for
driving pleasure and the joy of life. It captures the essence of pure design with only two
defining lines.”
Production details
Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2026 with pricing for the Bertone RUNABOU
starting at EUR 350,000, excluding VAT.
