Virtual Design Development
With the advances in computer technology and the development of affordable Virtual Reality technologies the automotive design industry has changed dramatically. Of course there are still those who like to cling on to methodologies developed over the past 75 years since these worked back in the day, so why change.
If your organization can afford to stick to the tried methods and prefers to take things slow and inefficient that is perfectly fine. Most however are on the clock and want to ensure they get the best proposals in the best possible finish, that stack up well against the competition.
Outside consultancies can no longer afford to compete against OEM studios by having similar sized studio and presentation places let alone the modeling staff on hand to build everything by hand. Those have all gone bankrupt and the ones still standing have had to adapt.
Here you can see how the latest Autodesk VRED software can be used not only during the deign process to evaluate proposals internally, but also in direct interaction with the clients through live global presentations in virtual reality. In a virtual studio we have placed the target competitor truck from Tesla and put 3 proposals next to it to compare.
The logic as far as aerodynamics was concerned was to try a narrow cab and see if that was at all possible and what the aerodynamic advantage might be, especially in comparison to the status quo from Tesla but also in comparison to a advanced truck concepts with a more conventional cab layout.
